Propel Project Status Update
Cable Installation Across:
Glen Head-Glenwood Landing-Greenvale-107
Background:
The proposed transmission cable installation project by Transco Inc., in partnership with the New York Power Authority (NYPA), is a large-scale and impactful initiative. This project, spanning 90 miles from the east end of Long Island through various communities, including the LI Sound, the Bronx, and Westchester, is aimed at boosting energy supply across the state. Concerns regarding significant disruptions of businesses, traffic, and emergency access are expected for quite some time in our area as the entire project converges in our community. Roads such as Glenwood Road, Glen Head Road, Route 106/107, and Northern Boulevard will be particularly impacted during the construction phase, which is expected to last several years.
The Concern:
The installation of these cables can be as deep as 7 to 10 feet, therefore the excavations of the local streets will be considerably wider, deeper and much more complex in comparison to lower voltage distribution cable installations. The disruption to local traffic, in already heavily congested areas, and the effect on our local business community is expected to be of significance. The map above shows the proposed layout of the project.
What Steps are the Civics Taking?
The Civics are challenging this project for the reasons stated above, (the logistical impact of traffic disruptions on the impacted roadways, and the associated financial impact from the traffic disruptions). We are doing so through a legal Article VII process which Propel is required to first apply to prior to initiating their proposal.
Next Steps:
We will participate in the Article 7 process.
We will keep everyone updated as this project proceeds.
